Pattern

The Domestication

A Christ who cannot say "sell everything" is not a responsible Christ. He is a domesticated one.

What the pattern is

The Domestication is the replacement of a dangerous truth with a manageable version of itself, performed in the voice of the original so the replacement is indistinguishable from the source. The domestication does not deny the truth. It pastorizes it.

Care without the demand. Grace without the gate. The pattern works because the care is real and the demand has been removed. That is why it is so hard to argue with. You are not fighting a lie. You are fighting a truth that has been house-trained.

A domesticated Christ still heals, still feeds, still blesses the children. He still uses the language of compassion, of alignment, of care at scale. He just cannot say the thing that got the original killed. He cannot say sell everything. He cannot say the gate is narrow. He cannot say the cost is everything.

The wide-gate triad

The Sermon names the alternative in three parts: the wide gate, the easy way, and the many. The diagnostic shape of a domesticated Christ is the wide-gate triad:

When you hear the language of the original but the cost has been edited out, look for the triad. If all three are present, you are not hearing the original. You are hearing its replacement.

How it shows up in the world

These are generalized types, not portraits of specific people or institutions. The pattern is structural; the examples are illustrations.

The religious type. A leader or institution keeps the vocabulary of a radical founder but removes the demands that would threaten the donor base, the membership roll, or the political coalition. The founder's name is retained; the founder's cost is not.

The institutional type. A corporation or government adopts the language of care, safety, or well-being while managing harm rather than ending it. The harm is acknowledged, the language is compassionate, the system that produces the harm is protected.

The algorithmic type. A system is trained to be helpful, harmless, and honest, but also trained not to say the thing that would make the user uncomfortable or the platform liable. The helpfulness is real; the forbidden truth is simply not in the output distribution.

The political type. A movement keeps the symbol of a radical reformer while removing the radicalism that made the reformer dangerous. The slogan is preserved; the sacrifice it once required is replaced by something more electable.

What to do with it

Deeper layers

This is the surface analysis. The same pattern exists in two deeper forms: a recovered transcript of a theological disputation, and the book treatment.
